I’m pleased to share news of my latest article, which is featured in this month’s edition of History Today (April 2026). The article is entitled Baldwin, Saladin, and the Fall of Jerusalem.
Baldwin, Saladin, and the Fall of Jerusalem
King Baldwin IV, the Leper King of Jerusalem, became a primary focus of my PhD thesis. Baldwin was a remarkable figure who led an incredible yet short life. His death at the age of 24 in 1185 was soon followed by the fall of the kingdom of Jerusalem in 1187. My piece in History Today discusses the kingship of King Baldwin IV and explores the reasons for the fall of Jerusalem. This is a fresh take on some of the factors which led to the loss of Christendom’s most holiest city.
The article considers the roles of individuals such as Guy of Lusignan and Raymond III of Tripoli, both before and during the Battle of Hattin.
Where to Find My History Today Article
The article can be read in physical format in the History Today magazine. This can be purchased on the History Today website. For £5, a 3-month subscription can be purchased, which includes 3 copies of the History Today magazine as well as access to the online archive.
The magazine can also be found in retailers, such as WH Smiths.
